Seven Things I’ve Learned About Gifts That Require Assembly

(1) It’s normal to feel more puzzled than excited. “I didn’t ask for this. What is it?”

(2) They don’t always make sense. “What’s with all these ropes, pulleys, and lag bolts?”

(3) It’s tempting to let it sit. “I don’t have time for this.”

(4) Consider the giver. “He’s a good person. He’s wise. I love him.”

(5) Wade into it. “It may be hard, but it’ll be great.”

(6) Don’t give up. “I can do this. Even if it’s complicated, requires prep work, involves sweat and effort, and I make mistakes.”

(7) Celebrate your gift! “This is awesome! How did I live without it? Thanks so much!”
