A nearby city is replacing its sewer mains. They’re excavating entire roadways by employing all the backhoes, bulldozers, bucket loaders, dump trucks and cranes you can squeeze into a residential neighborhood. Between the deep chasms and lumbering vehicles, it’s quite the event. Yet, despite all the screeching, scraping, thumping, and rumbling about, what caught my attention was a quiet, unassuming young man. When he arrived, all else fell silent. He was the surveyor.
Most of modern life rolls seamlessly along due to the essential influence of these behind-the-scenes people. Those who understand the laws, dynamics, and nonnegotiables of the situation.
The Person who wields this influence in our lives is God’s Holy Spirit. Whether He’s providing the understanding, convictions, and wisdom we need to live well, or convicting us to turn toward God rather than away from Him, the Holy Spirit’s involvement in our lives is essential.1 Because every soul needs a surveyor.
- One example of this is found in the biblical book of Galatians, chapter 5, verses 16-18. ↩︎
