For those who travel more than once in a blue moon, it’s common to have a favorite hotel chain. You know what to expect, appreciate the standards or amenities they offer, and enjoy a free night now and then. Here’s what we like about our standard brand.
Friendly hospitality — Things like cheerful welcomes, warm smiles, and the offer of ice water or fresh snacks when we arrive.
Free breakfast — Including all the options. Standard fare (bacon, eggs, muffins, etc.), healthier alternatives (oatmeal, fruit, nuts, etc.), and always coffee to go.
Clean rooms — With only two exceptions* over twenty years, the rooms, beds, and bathrooms are consistently spotless. And no bedbugs ever!
Real soap! — For those of us who still don’t understand how to use body wash, it’s always nice to find a bar of actual soap in the room.
Employee Agency — Whenever we’ve stayed longer than one night, the desk teams have gone above and beyond to make us feel at home. Extra daily rations (e.g., towels, snacks), allowances for guests in the room and pool, pointing us to free local attractions (e.g., a mini-golf course), and more.
Generous Discount Program — Most hotel chains feature a rewards program, but it’s especially nice when the goals are attainable, and include heavy-travel seasons.
Walkability — We enjoy an excellent Interstate system in our country, but it’s still nice to unwind at the end of a travel day with a peaceful walk. We actually remember certain hotels by their walkability options. Whether nearby restaurants, neighborhoods, parks, shopping centers, or even cemeteries, the ability to get there on foot is a pleasant perk from any hotel chain.
* Exceptions: We once found a few pebbles of dog food in the corner, and another time encountered dirty towels in the bathroom. Everyone occasionally has an off day!
