2033

Imagine preparing for a special guest. Someone who matters very much. Not just someone important, or someone you haven’t seen for a while, but someone who dramatically influenced your life. Someone you love.

Many people believe that Jesus Christ will soon return. Some see 2033 as the year, while others believe it will be “within a generation” of Israel’s statehood (1948). Though the Bible is not specific on the timing of Jesus’ return (Matthew 24:36), it is specific about His coming. He will return as the ruler of everything, and He’ll be interested in how we spent our time and influence while waiting.

With that in mind, what represents a wise use of our time? What should we focus on if the time of Jesus Christ’s return is near?

• Learning what matters to Him?
• Explaining God’s love to people who don’t know about Him?
• Loving your neighbor (or enemy) as yourself?
• Using your ‘spiritual gifting’ if you’re a follower of Jesus Christ?

We prepare for upcoming events every day, whether it’s going to work, having guests over for dinner, or visiting friends in a different city. No one shows up unprepared, and no one invites friends over without first getting ready. How much more so when the arriving “guest” is actually our King and Creator?

It’s crucial to understand what will matter to Jesus Christ when He arrives. This is why He told the stories1 about the minas, the talents, and the treasure buried in the field. He’s helping us live on purpose, whether He returns next week, month, or several years from now. He’s giving us a chance to live on purpose, to use our influence, and to get to know the King.
