Does the Bible matter?

Howard Hendricks is a legendary name in evangelical circles. A famous prof from Dallas Theological Seminary, he trained countless pastors, spoke at conferences, and wrote books for sixty-plus years.

He once told a group of students that the folks who led him to Christ never mentioned the Bible. When he asked what he was supposed to do with it they said it didn’t matter. “Pick it up and read anything you want — it’s all holy.”

A year later someone showed him how to read and study it — and that’s what changed his life.

We invest considerable time in listening, loving, and being culturally relevant. All good. But let’s also teach our students how to feed themselves and grow in their own faith.

As for Howard Hendricks, after teaching “how to study the Bible” for decades, he turned his course into a book — Living by the Book. A worthwhile investment.

I’m a husband and father, follower of Jesus Christ, and member of the Moody Publishers team. I've worked with gifted authors and their books for thirty-plus years, and I believe the local church is where we become the kind of people who reveal what Jesus is like. Since this is my personal blog, the views and opinions expressed herein are my own, not those of my employer. However — books, publishing, the work of the church, and learning to follow Jesus are central to my daily experience, so that's what this blog is about. Thanks for visiting! Paul
